The branch is analyzing and strategizing with the contracted manufacturer of the first Constellation-class vessel.
The U.S. Navy’s new Constellation-class frigate will be delayed at least a year as the Wisconsin shipyard, which won the construction contract four years ago, is hundreds of workers short in staffing. Construction on the first guided-missile vessel began in September of 2022. The military branch informed Congress that delivery will likely happen in 2027.
Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said he has directed a review of ship acquisition “to provide an assessment of national and local causes of shipbuilding challenges, as well as recommended actions for achieving a healthier U.S. shipbuilding industrial base that provides combat capabilities that our warfighters need, on a schedule that is relevant.”
Secretary Del Toro continued, “I remain concerned with the lingering effects of post-pandemic conditions on our shipbuilders and their suppliers that continue to affect our shipbuilding programs, particularly our Columbia Class Ballistic Missile Submarines and Constellation Class Frigate.”
